The Monopoly board layout, space by space
What is on the 40-space classic board: corners, the eight colour groups, railroads, utilities, card spaces and taxes.
Play KirayaForty spaces, four corners
The classic board is a loop of forty spaces. The four corners are GO, the jail square (which you either visit harmlessly or occupy), free parking, and the go-to-jail corner that sends you across the board. Play runs one way around the loop, and passing GO pays a salary whether you land on it or roll straight past.
What fills the sides
| Space type | How many |
|---|---|
| Streets in colour groups | 22 |
| Railroads | 4 |
| Utilities | 2 |
| Chance (?) spaces | 3 |
| Community Chest spaces | 3 |
| Tax spaces | 2 |
| Corners | 4 |
The twenty-two streets are divided into eight colour groups. The two groups nearest the corners hold two streets each; the other six hold three. You need every street in a group before you can build on any of it, which is why the two-street groups are quicker to complete and the three-street groups are harder to finish and worth more once you do.
Position sets the price
Prices rise as you move around the loop, so the cheapest group sits just after GO and the most expensive just before it. Rent climbs faster than price does, which is why the last side of the board is dangerous to walk past once someone has built there.
Kiraya's boards
Kiraya's boards are original but built on the same loop. World Tour is 36 spaces: twenty cities grouped by the country they are in, four airports, event spaces, taxes and its own corners. Harborline is the shorter 28-space map for a quicker game. Every square, price and rent ladder on both is published in the board reference.
